Zelensky Urges U.S. for Swift Weapon Delivery: Volodymyr Zelensky says Ukraine can only withstand an anticipated Russian offensive if U.S. weapons arrive quickly after the House passes a major military aid package.

As Russia celebrates the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi forces in World War II on May 9, Zelensky’s forces are preparing for a major battle in the east.

According to Zelensky, his soldiers are outgunned and lack the equipment they need to combat Russian reconnaissance drones, which guide their artillery.

Ukrainian forces lacked long-range weapons, as well as adequate air defenses, and lost time and momentum while U.S. lawmakers debated the aid package.

Our process has stalled for half a year, and we’ve lost the initiative in several directions, particularly in the east,” Zelensky said.

“Now we have all the chance to stabilize the situation and to take the initiative, and that’s why we need to actually have the weapon systems.”

There has been bitter infighting among Republicans over whether to side with Ukraine against Russia, which invaded the country more than two years ago.

There are warnings in Washington and Kyiv that Ukraine’s front-line units are rationing armaments, and that Moscow soon will have a 10-to-1 advantage in artillery rounds.

Zelensky did not specify when his forces might regain an advantage on the battlefield once the weapons were received, nor did he indicate that the additional support would be decisive.

Zelensky said that this support will strengthen Ukraine’s armed forces and give us a chance to win.

As he thanked House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), whose support for the package threatens his leadership position, as well as President Biden, Zelensky called upon the Senate to act so weapons can be sent to Ukraine “as fast as possible so that we can provide tangible assistance to the soldiers on the front line as soon as possible, not in another six months.”

The $95 billion aid package will be voted on Tuesday afternoon, according to Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-NY).

The Senate is expected to consider a $95 billion aid package for Ukraine and Israel this week.

Pentagon officials say Ukraine will receive substantial military support.

Some weapons will soon reach the battlefield, according to an anonymous official.
