Mpox is the latest major outbreak and this is the second time in 2 years to happen. This disease is a lot more contagious than the last one with a higher fatality rate and faster spreading.

World Health Organization Declares Mpox as an International Public Health Emergency: Mpox is the latest major outbreak and this is the second time in 2 years to happen. The contagious disease previously known as monkeypox has killed 450 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa.

Many countries outside Africa also suffered from Mpox in 2022 but the major outbreak continued in Africa. From Congo, the disease has traveled to central and east Africa. But this variant isn’t the one that Europe and America had suffered with before this disease is a lot more contagious than the last one with a higher fatality rate and faster spreading.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “A coordinated international response is essential to stop this outbreak and save lives,”.  He is worried about the potential outbreak of the disease. In 2022 around July WHO declared  Mpox as an International Public Health Emergency for the very first time at that outbreak affected Europe, Asia, and even America. According to WHO 87,000 cases and 140 deaths were reported at that time.

Committee Chair Professor of WHO Dimie Ogoina said, “The current upsurge of Mpox in parts of Africa, along with the spread of a new sexually transmissible strain of the monkeypox virus, is an emergency, not only for Africa but for the entire globe. Mpox, originating in Africa, was neglected there, and later caused a global outbreak in 2022. It is time to act decisively to prevent history from repeating itself.

Mpox is closely related to smallpox but is less severe. Although anyone can catch the disease but the major source was men having sex with men.

Unlike last time luckily health agencies around the world have acted quicker than last time and have started to improve the observation and find a solution for the outbreak.

WHO is collaborating with countries and vaccine manufacturers on potential vaccine donations. WHO is coordinating with its partners through the Medical Countermeasures Network to facilitate equitable access to vaccines, therapeutics, diagnostics, and other tools.
