What the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) gives you may rest on the type of claim you made. The first claim you made to get disability benefits is called the “original claim.”

For a veteran who is single and doesn’t have any children, the payment can be as little as $171 at a 10% rate. For someone with a wife, one kid, and two parents who depend on them, the payment can be as much as $4,433.

An additional amount is assigned to the compensation if the beneficiary has more than one dependent child or if their spouse also receives aid and assistance.

Your VA may determine that you cannot work due to your disability and assign you a 100% rate and corresponding pay increase.

You can increase your disability rate if you develop a new condition arising from the original condition for which you receive compensation.

FThat is, if you get arthritis from hurting your knee at work or heart disease from having high blood pressure while you were in the military, you might be able to get more money.

Because of your condition, you can make a special claim if you need special care. This can help you get a modified car if your condition makes it impossible for you to drive, a temporary increase in your payment in certain situations, or an increase in your compensation if your condition makes it impossible for you to work.

Your VA claim must be supported by medical evidence, including medical and hospital records, or records from a private hospital or doctor.

In addition to supporting testimonies, the VA will review your discharge papers and in-service treatment records at its expense.
