The US Urges Iran to Avoid Escalation: On Monday, the US has been requesting other countries to tell Iran that increasing tensions in the Middle East is not in their best interest through diplomatic channels.

State Secretary Antony Blinken said that it is a critical moment for the region. After there were fears that Iran was planning a response attack against Israel, Blinken said that Washington was “engaged in intense diplomacy, pretty much around the clock” to make things settle down.

In Washington during the signing ceremony, Blinken said, “All parties must refrain from escalation. All parties must take steps to ease tensions. Escalation is not in anyone’s interest. It will only lead to more conflict, more violence, more insecurity.”

Last week, Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh was murdered in Tehran which angered several Iranians, and fears of revenge on Israelis grew. This also led to a rise of concerns that the war in Gaza could turn into a bigger Middle East war.

Iran has blamed Israel for the assassination of the Hamas chief and said that they will punish it. However, Israel has kept silent and did not take responsibility for the murder of Ismail Haniyeh.

Furthermore, Iran supports both Hamas and Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group. Hamas who is at war with Israel and Hezbollah who is vexed with the murder of Fuad Shukr during the Israel strike in Beirut last week, both are against Israel.

The White House reported that US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were informed about the situation prevailing in the Middle East.

The national security told them about the danger that Iran and its allies Hamas and Hezbollah pose to Israel and the US. Joe Biden and Kamala Hariss were also informed about the strike an Iraq’s al Asad airbase on Monday.

They also told Biden and Harris that they are not sure when Iran and its allies will lauch an attack on Israel and “the specifics of such an attack.” Biden and Harris were also informed about U.S. efforts to defend Israel militarily if Iran attacks them so as to “de-escalate regional tension” and make a deal in Gaza for a ceasefire and release all the hostages.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller added, “One of the points of the engagements that we have had is to urge countries to pass messages to Iran and urge countries to make clear to Iran that it is very much not in their interests to escalate this conflict, that it is very much not in their interest to launch another attack on Israel.”

Miller also added, “I would expect that some of them would pass that message along and impress that point upon the government of Iran.”

State Secretary Antony Blinken also added, “What it comes down to really is all parties finding ways to come to an agreement, not look for reasons to delay or to say no, It is urgent that all parties make the right choices in the hours and days ahead.”
