Texas Tax Free Weekend 2024: During the annual Tax-Free Weekend, the Texas Comptroller’s Office wants all taxpayers to support local companies and save money at the same time.

The event this year lasts from Friday, August 9th, until Sunday, August 11th, at midnight.

During this time, most clothes, shoes, school materials, and backpacks that cost less than $100 can be bought tax-free from Texas-based stores, whether you shop in-person or online.

The Comptroller noted, “In most cases, you do not need to give the seller an exemption certificate to buy qualifying items tax free.”
Keep in mind that the sales tax break only applies to certain things bought over the holiday weekend. “Items you buy before or after the sales tax holiday do not qualify for exemption, and there is no tax refund available,” the Comptroller says.

The Comptroller gives a full list of items that qualify, except for most clothes and shoes that cost less than $100, and for “items sold for $100 or more, clothing subscription boxes, and specially-designed athletic activity or protective-use clothing or footwear, golf cleats and football pads do not qualify for the exemption” since they are typically worn only for those sports.

However, “tennis shoes, jogging suits, and swimsuits can be worn for other activities and qualify for the exemption.”

“Clothing or shoe rentals, alterations (including embroidery), and cleaning services” are also not covered, nor are “items used to make or repair clothing.”

The Comptroller makes it clear that the exemption only applies to the qualifying items and not to the whole purchase price. So, “if you buy two shirts for $80 each, each shirt qualifies for the exemption because each is less than $100, even though the total purchase price is $160.”

What do you need to know about the 2024 Texas tax-free weekend ?

Overall, the Texas Tax-Free Weekend is a great chance to save money on necessities and support local companies. Like the Comptroller says, “The Comptroller encourages all taxpayers to support Texas businesses while saving money on tax-free purchases of most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks (sold for less than $100) during the annual Tax-Free Weekend.”

Now is a great time to buy a lot of clothes, shoes, and other necessary things without having to pay sales tax. But the exemption doesn’t cover everything. There is a long list of things that can be used and things that can’t.

You can steal any piece of clothes, shoes, or accessories that costs less than $100. That means you don’t have to pay extra tax on new shirts, pants, shoes, and other things.

Even if they are less than $100, things like “belt buckles (sold separately),” “jewelry,” and “watches” are still taxed.

During this holiday, many everyday items are not subject to sales tax. Clothing for babies, sports socks, adult diapers, and even some work uniforms are not taxed.

The Comptroller writes down, “Adult diapers (E), Baby clothes (E), Athletic socks (E), Employee uniforms (unless rented) (E).”

It can be hard to choose the right shoes. Some types of boots, like “general purpose” and “hiking,” are exempt from the tax. But “climbing (cleated or spiked) (T), ski (T), and waders (T)” will still be charged.

When it comes to items, you have to pay tax on hair clips, wallets, and watch bands, but not on belts with buckles attached.

“Hair clips (T), wallets (T), and watch bands (T)” vs. “Belts with attached buckles (E)” is how the Comptroller puts it.

To sum up, the sales tax break is a great chance to save some money, but it’s important to know what’s not taxed. Remember this list to get all the tax-free necessities and move through the aisles like a pro.
