Table of Contents

California’s CalFresh initiative to end hunger and improve nutrition is federally recognized as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Under the California Department of Social Services, it provides low-income individuals and families with monthly benefits to purchase groceries and promote healthy eating.

Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards send benefits electronically. These cards can be used at approved retailers, such as grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and some online stores. This is a lot like how the SUN Bucks card will work.

To activate the card, it only needs to be used within 122 days of the money being added to it. This is similar to how CalFresh EBT cards need to be used to keep the money active.

How does SUN Bucks work?

A Summer EBT (S-EBT) card gives families $120 per eligible child to make sure their school-aged kids are well fed and well-nourished over the summer.

Children aged six to 18 on CalFresh or Medi-Cal are automatically eligible for SUN Bucks, so cards will be mailed to their CalFresh or Medi-Cal addresses.

Also, kids and teens up to 22 years old who are on a national school breakfast or lunch program and are approved for free or low-cost meals will immediately be added to the scheme. Kids who go to a CEP/Provision 1, 2, or 3 school might also be able to apply, but they will need to get an alternative income form from their school first, which will be held until the application is approved.

If you have further questions about eligibility or need assistance with your SUN Bucks card, you can reach the SUN Bucks Helpline at (877)328-9677.
