To access their Social Security accounts and other online services, users will soon need either a Login.gov or ID.me account.
More than 5 million account holders have already made the switch, but about 46 million of the 86 million users of my Social Security still need to switch to a Login.gov account.

The SSA hasn’t set a deadline for legacy accounts to switch to Login.gov.
It’s part of the SSA’s effort to cut down on wait times for callers to its 800 number, which averaged 24 minutes in April, down from 42 minutes in November.

SSA pushes for secure logins
Martin O’Malley, the commissioner of Social Security, said that the change made doing business with the SSA “safe and secure.”
“We’re excited to transition to Login.gov to access our online services, streamlining the process and ease of use for the public across agencies,” he said.
The SSA wants people with a Social Security account to sign in. Once they do, they’ll be given the choice to switch to Login.gov.
Once they’ve linked their accounts, a confirmation screen will show up that lets them see their own Social Security details.
The Social Security Administration says that people who already have a Login.gov or ID.me account don’t need to make a new one.
