National Voluntary Blood Donation Significance
National Voluntary Blood Donation is a very important day as it makes people realize how their little contributions can save many lives even though donors don’t get many payments or compensation in return.
However, what they really get is peace, happiness, respect, and blessings as their little contributions help bring smiles to the faces of needy ones.
A report published by the National Cancer Institute found that people who donate blood often lower the rate of iron in their blood and reduce the chances of getting affected by liver, lung, stomach, and throat cancer.
The Head of Medical, Scientific, and Regulatory matters at Roche Diagnostics India, Dr Sandeep Sewlikar said, “According to a study, India needs 14·6 million units of blood which remains unmet; leading to huge supply gap. 100% voluntary donations can enhance blood safety in India, but currently, only 70% of the blood donated is on a voluntary basis and 30% is still replacement blood. Although the National and State Blood Transfusion Councils, various NGOs and even corporates have taken steps to increase voluntary blood donations, it needs more concerted effort from all stakeholders to encourage the public for voluntary blood donations.”
