Nandalal Bose Biography: Nandalal Bose is the one who founded Indian art and an artist who fought and rejected everything of the British.

Nadalal Bose is a famous Indian artist and played an important role in the Contextual Modernism movement that includes people who are influenced by other cultures but still stay deeply rooted in their own culture and history.

He was the student of the great Abanindranath Tagore and was famous for his  “Indian style” of painting.

He was among those artists who faced a lot of difficulties in following their passion but Bose didn’t give up even though he didn’t get support from his family, he pursued his passion for arts.

The Indian artist Nandalal Bose was born in Munger district of Bihar state. He was born to Khetramoni Devi and Purna Chandra Bose.

Nandalal Bose’s mother along with being a housewife was skilled in making toys and dolls which inspired Nandalal towards creativity.

At a very early age, he started decorating Puja pandals and got interested in modeling images.

He was born into a middle-class family and saw a lot of hardship from a young age but battled his family’s financial crisis and became a skilled artisan.

Nandalal Bose was born on 3 December 1882 in Haveli Kharagpur which is in Munger district of Bihar.

At 15, Nandalal Bose shifted to Calcutta where he completed his higher studies at the Central Collegiate School. In 1902 he completed his graduation from the same institution.

Nanadalal wanted to study at an art school but wasn’t permitted by his family. In 1905, he joined the Presidency College to study commerce as he wasn’t able to qualify for promotion.

But later he succeeded in persuading his parents and joined the Calcutta’s School of Art to study art.

Nandalal Bose Career

Nandlal Bose was a famous Indian artist who played an important role in the development of Indian Art. He was influenced by the murals in the Ajanta Caves.

Bose’s first art show was at the Indian Society of Oriental Art where he exhibited iconic pieces of “Siva and Sati” and “Sati,” he even won a cash prize of 500 rupees.

Nandlal was deeply moved by landscapes and formed portraits of Mahatma Gandhi, which later became an important symbol of non-violence.

He was skilled at combining Indian subjects with Western styles, and his works showed the essence of people’s life. Nandlal Bose was also given the responsibility of decorating the Indian Constitution and designing emblems for government awards such as Bharat Ratna and the Padma Shri.

Bose made over 7,000 portraits and most of them are stored in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi. He was also the principal of the Kala Bhavan school in Santiniketan from 1922 to 1951.

Sister Nivedita also encouraged him to create the Ajanta Frescoes, which is one of his best works.

Nandalal Bose mother was a skilled craftswoman Khetramoni Devi and his father was  Purna Chandra Bose who worked at a Darbhanga Estate.  He had one brother named Nimai Bose and one sister named Kamala Dutta.

In 1903, Nandalal Bose married Sudhira Devi who was the daughter of his family friend and has one son and two daughters. Nandalal Bose son’s name was Biswarup Bose and his daughter’s name was Jamuna Sen and Gouri Bhanja.

Nandalal Bose died on 16 April 1966 at the age of 83 in Santiniketan, West Bengal, India.
