Indian ghazal musician Pankaj Udhas is recognised for having brought the genre of music to a wider audience in India. Born in Jetpur, Gujarat, on May 17, 1951, he started out in Bollywood as a playback vocalist before focusing on the semi-classical ghazal genre. Pankaj Udhas studied classical music as a child and had a strong interest in music. Initially, he was trained by his older brother Kantilal Udhas, and subsequently by Ustad Gulam Mustafa Khan. He attended St. Xavier’s School in Ahmedabad for his education before moving to Mumbai to pursue a career in music. He studied classical music for a number of years prior to beginning his playback singing career.
Pankaj Udhas debuted as a playback vocalist for the film Hum Tum Aur Woh in 1979. He went on to sing in a number of additional films, including Prem Pratigyaa (1989), Utsav (1984), and Saath Saath (1982). However, he didn’t become well-known as a ghazal singer until 1984, when his debut solo album Aahat was released. Throughout his career, he has given over 60 record releases and given concerts all over the world.

In2001, he was also the recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Ghazal Singing. India’s fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, was given to him in 2003. In 2013, the All India Ghalib Academy bestowed upon him the Ghalib Award as well.
