The politics of Karnataka have been dynamic and complex, with multiple political parties vying for power.
The state was previously known as the Mysore State, and it was under the rule of the Wodeyar dynasty until 1947 when India gained independence. After independence, the state was renamed Karnataka in 1973.
Here is a brief history of the politics of Karnataka:
Pre-Independence Era: Prior to independence, the state was under the rule of the Maharajas of Mysore. The state had a legislative council, which was constituted in 1907.
Post-Independence Era: After India gained independence in 1947, the Mysore State was merged with other neighboring regions to form the present-day Karnataka. The first general election in the state was held in 1952, and the Indian National Congress (INC) emerged as the dominant political party.
Devaraj Urs Era: In 1972, Devaraj Urs became the Chief Minister of Karnataka. He introduced several reforms, including the reservation of seats in government jobs and educational institutions for backward classes. He also introduced the concept of the “Janata government,” which brought together various opposition parties to form a coalition government.
Janata Parivar Era: In the 1980s, the Janata Party emerged as a major political force in Karnataka. The Janata Party government, led by Ramakrishna Hegde, implemented several reforms, including the decentralization of power, the introduction of the Panchayati Raj system, and the creation of the Bangalore Development Authority.
Rise of BJP: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as a major political force in the state in the 1990s. In 2008, the BJP formed a government in Karnataka, with B.S. Yediyurappa as the Chief Minister.
Coalition Era: In recent years, the politics of Karnataka have been marked by the rise of coalition governments. In 2018, the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Indian National Congress formed a coalition government in the state, with H.D. Kumaraswamy as the Chief Minister. However, the government collapsed in 2019, and the BJP formed a new government with B.S. Yediyurappa as the Chief Minister.

After a contentious campaign, the epic battle of the ballots in Karnataka is ready to start. Voting has begun for the 224 assembly seats in Karnataka, where there are 2,615 candidates competing. The Election Commission of India states that 113 seats are required to be elected. A total of 42,48,028 more people have registered to vote in the assembly election.
Contrary to the Congress party’s demand for voters to “vote wisely,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged higher voter turnout in Karnataka.

The current Assembly elections would determine the electoral futures of 2,615 candidates from different parties. The incumbent BJP, Congress, and JDS engaged in a heated campaign phase when they sparred and employed all of their heavyweights to win over voters.
- In the Karnataka elections held on Wednesday, JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy predicted that his party would suffer a “hit” in as many as 25 Assembly constituencies where it had a possibility of winning.
The former chief minister said that his party will be “King” and not simply the “King maker” and that, despite financial limitations, it will win more seats than Congress and the BJP.

- The Election Commission reported that 23 individuals were detained after residents of Masabinala in the Vijayapura district halted a poll duty van carrying electronic voting machines (EVMs), assaulted an officer, and damaged control and ballot equipment on Wednesday. The villagers interfered with a section officer’s truck carrying reserved EVMs for the Assembly elections, the EC stated in a statement, damaging three VVPATs (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) and two control and ballot units per villager.
