Kannadasan Wiki and Biography
Kannadasan was born in June 1927 and is often famous as Kaviarasu, which means “King of Poets.” Kannadasan’s works include over 5,000 lyrics, 6,000 poems, and 232 books, he is believed to be an exceptional poet and lyricist after Subramania Bharati.
Among his works, the most successful work was the Arthamulla Indhu Matham which is a 10-part religious book on Hinduism. Apart from this, he was also an excellent writer and became known as the first person to earn the National Film Award for Best Lyrics in the film ‘Kuzhanthaikkaga’.
Kannadasan also included himself in politics and was also the founding member of Sivaji Ganesan’s political party, Thamizhaga Munnetra Munnani.
Kannadasan Early Life
Kannadasan was born on 24 June 1927 in Sirukoodalpatti, near Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu. He was born in a Tamilian Nattukottai Nagarathar family to Sathappan Chettiar and Visalakshi Aachi.
Kannadasan was the eighth child of Sathappan Chettiar and Visalakshi Aachi, they in total had 10 children.
During the Chettinad period, there was a common practice that was formed to give children to others who didn’t have any children of their own. Just like this, Kannadasan was also adopted at the age of eight for Rs 7,000. Before his adoption, he was known as Muttaiah.
After his parents adopted him, they named him Narayanan however, later on, while searching for a job he found his name very old-fashioned and changed his name to Kannadasan based on Lord Krishna who also was the eighth child.
Kannadasan studied till eighth grade and after that he dropped out of school but still was interested in reading and writing. His dream was to display his stories in big magazines and to pursue his dream he left for Chennai at the age of 16.

Kannadasan Career
He began his career in Chennai where he first worked at a private company in Tiruvottiyur. After that, he worked as an editor in a Tamilian magazine.
Kannadasan also played a major role in the Dravidian atheistic movement and was highly interested in the Tamil language and culture. He was magnificent in Tamalian literature and poetry, he was highly inspired by Aandaal’s Thiruppaavai.
Kannadaasan’s most recognizable contribution to Tamil literature was his songwriting. He was considered one of the greatest Tamil poets after Subramanya Bharathi.
He also appeared in several films such as Parasakthi, Illara Jothi, Sugam Enge and many others. Kannadaasan also created the famous Tamil film ‘Sivagangai Seemai’ which tells us the story of Indian freedom fighter Marudhu Pandaiars.
He also wrote famous biographies such as Vanavasam and Manavasam and was known as the poet laureate of Tamil Nadu. He also received a lot of praise for his series Arthamulla Indhu Matham in which he explained the Hinduism ideals clearly.
Kannadasan Death
Kannadasan died during his visit to Chicago, Illinois to attend a meeting organized by the Tamil Association of Chicago. He died on October 17, 1981, at the age of 54.
