June 2023 Stimulus Checks: Alleviating Financial Strains Across Various States

In response to inflation and budget surpluses from the previous year, several states are taking action by issuing stimulus payments and tax refunds in June. To assist you, we have compiled a comprehensive list of states offering these financial aids, along with instructions on how to request them and the respective amounts.

California: Under the Guaranteed Income Program known as Breathe, residents of Los Angeles County can qualify for monthly payments of $1,000 for a duration of two years. Eligibility requires individuals to have been in foster care until at least the age of 18 and have a household income at or below the local median.

Georgia: The government of Georgia has announced rebates of $250 for individuals and $500 for married couples. Eligible residents are those who have filed tax returns for both 2021 and 2022. Those who submitted their returns by April 18 can expect to receive their payment this month, although it may take up to eight weeks.

Massachusetts: As a taxpayer, you may be eligible for a refund of approximately fourteen percent of your state tax liability. This significant reimbursement is being distributed due to a revenue surplus that exceeded state regulations. The initial installment of compensation was issued in December to those who filed their 2021 tax returns by October 17, 2022. Subsequent refund checks have been mailed one month after receiving the tax return, meaning those who submitted their claim in May will receive their payment in June.

New Jersey: Through the Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters (ANCHOR) program, around 2 million households in New Jersey have become eligible for property tax rebates. As part of the ANCHOR benefits program, 50,000 individuals will receive $450. Disbursement is ongoing, and recipients will receive funds via direct deposit or cheque. The application deadline for the program was February 28.

Minnesota: In addition, eligible Minnesota residents will receive direct tax refunds beginning in 2023, as per a recently signed law. The Minnesota Department of Revenue will issue direct tax refunds to qualifying residents. The refund amounts will be as follows: $520 for married couples filing jointly with a cumulative adjusted income of less than $150,000, $260 for individuals with a gross adjusted income of $75,000 or less, and an additional $260 per dependent claimed on the tax return, up to a maximum of three dependents.

To qualify for these refunds, individuals must have been a Minnesota resident for part of 2021, filed the appropriate tax returns (such as the Real Estate Credit Refund or Renter’s Property Tax Refund), submitted their tax return prior to December 31, 2022, and not been claimed as a dependent on someone else’s Minnesota income tax return for 2021. The refunds will be automatically sent to eligible taxpayers based on their income or property tax returns for 2021, with payments expected to commence in the autumn according to the state’s tax authority.

These initiatives aim to provide much-needed financial relief to individuals and families across various states, offering a helping hand during these challenging times.
