International Literacy Day was first introduced at the World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy which was held in Tehran, Iran, in 1965.

After this conference, the idea of observing international Literacy was given a lot of attention and dedicated to celebrating this literacy day around the world.

On September 8, 1966, at its 14th General Conference, UNESCO announced that September 8 would be celebrated as International Literacy Day.

On September 8, 1967, after a year, the whole world observed International Literacy Day for the first time.

International Literacy Day Significance

As per the reports from UNESCO, around 775 million people globally are illiterate. The report further states that one out of five are illiterate and  Two-thirds of these individuals are women.

Thus, International Literacy Day was formed to spread awareness about the importance of literacy and personal development. Several government groups organized programs on this day to promote literacy.
