Officials in Yellowstone National Park are investigating after effects of a Hydrothermal explosion in Biscuit Bay.

Hydrothermal blast damages boardwalk: On Tuesday, a Hydrothermal blast occurred at Yellowstone National Park’s Biscuit Basin causing huge damage to a boardwalk and nearby things.

The Hydrothermal blast created a commotion among the people who were present at Yellowstone National Park’s Biscuit Basin, as they run to a safer location.

As per the reports from the U.S. Geological Survey, the Hydrothermal explosion happened at the Biscuit Basin area and about 2.1 miles northwest of Old Faithful near the Black Diamond Pool.

The reports further stated that the explosion took place around 10:30 am on Tuesday and so far no casualties have been reported.

Videos that went viral showed that the blast was so massive that it totally destroyed the boardwalk and threw debris into the sky and surrounding areas.

According to the reports, investigations are on to identify the cause of the Hydrothermal blast, and boardwalks and parking lots in Biscuit Basin are restricted to visitors for now.

The U.S. Geological Survey further reports that volcanic activity in the Yellowstone area is still normal.

Furthermore, a video that went viral on Facebook showed the explosion as it created a huge cloud of smoke and the people near the explosion ran madly to the safety.

The Facebook video was shared by a user named Vlada March wrote, “@Biscuit basin at Yellowstone National Park Wyoming just exploded right in front of us. Boardwalk destroyed, my mom got some of the debris but everyone is safe. Unbelievable and grateful to be alive.”

In a statement, the USGC read quoted by USA Today, “Hydrothermal explosions like that of today are not a sign of impending volcanic eruptions, and they are not caused by magma rising towards the surface.”

Michael Poland who is a Scientist-in-Charge said that this type of explosion takes place because water turns into steam underground rapidly. This takes place quite often in Yellowstone National Park.

In May 2009, a similar blast occurred at Biscuit Bay and also in Norris Geyser Basin in April.
