Gieve Patel was born on August 18, 1940, in Mumbai in a Gujarati family. Patel’s father was a dentist and his mother was the daughter of a doctor. He completed his education at St. Xavier’s High School and his graduation from the Grant Medical College in Mumbai.
After becoming a successful doctor, he worked a government job in his native village of Nargol in Gujarat. He then worked as a general practitioner in Mumbai until he retired in 2005.

Gieve Patel released his first set of poems in 1966, his poem works include How Do You Withstand, Body, and Mirrored Mirroring which are linked between his landowning family and tribal Warlis.
He used to operate poetry workshops at Rishi Valley School and created a collection of poetry in 2006. Patel’s poetry works include Anthology of Contemporary Indian Poetry, Confronting Love, and The Golden Treasure of Writers Workshop Poetry on a Killing Tree.
