Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam played a prominent role in the development of India’s Ballistic missile, launch vehicle technology, and nuclear weapons programs.

He was the 11th president of India with the support of both the opposition and the ruling party. He was also regarded as the “People’s President”

A.P.J Abdul Kalam was born in the pilgrimage center of Rameswaram on Pamban Island, to a Tamil Muslim family.

His father Jainulabdeen Marakayar was a boat owner and an Imam in a local mosque and his mother Ashiamma was a housewife.

Abdul Kalam was the youngest sibling in his family. By the time Kalam was born, poverty was introduced to his family before he was born his family was wealthy Marakayar traders and landowners, but due to the opening of the Pamban Bridge to the mainland in 1914 Family business was doomed and wealth was lost.

Kalam was average on the academic front but was hardworking and eager to learn and he started selling newspapers as a boy to support his family’s meager income.

He completed his schooling at Schwartz Higher Secondary School, Ramanathapuram Then he attended St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli from where he graduated in Physics in 1954 then he moved to Madras and joined Madras Institute of Technology.

After graduating from the Madras Institute of Technology in 1958 he joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).  A.P.J Abdul Kalam became the project director of SLV-III which was the first satellite launch vehicle that was both designed and produced in India. After rejoining DRDO in 1982, he planned the programs that gave birth to several successful missiles which got him his title ‘ Missile Man Of India’ among which was Agni, India’s first intermediate-range ballistic missile. And his leading the nuclear project of India made him a national hero.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s Death

A.P.J Abdul Kalam visited the Indian Institute of Management Shillong which is in Shillong to deliver a lecture on “Creating a Livable Planet Earth”. He was feeling uneasy initially deboarding the flight but was able to enter the auditorium. Only five minutes into his lecture, he collapsed and was rushed to nearby Bethany Hospital in a critical condition But despite all efforts, he was declared dead due to Cardiac arrest.
