Day 880 of Russia-Ukraine war: Local officials say that Ukraine attacked a cargo ship moored at the Port of Kavkaz, which is right next to the Crimean Peninsula that Russia has taken over. The attack killed one person and hurt four others.

The Russian military said it had taken over another village as it continued to move forward in the eastern Donetsk area of Ukraine. In 2023, Russian troops took over the Ukrainian town of Bakhmut after months of gun fire. Ivano-Dariivka is a settlement about 30 kilometers (18 miles) northeast of Bakhmut.

A Russian air attack overnight in the northern Sumy region of Ukraine destroyed a power plant, leaving 50,400 people without power. There were no casualties.

Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Minister, visited China recently for talks and said it was crucial for Kyiv and Beijing to engage in direct dialogue to end the Russian invasion and achieve a just peace.

Kuleba is the first important Ukrainian minister to visit since Russia attacked Ukraine on February 20, 2022.

The EU won’t be able to pay member states that gave weapons to Ukraine until Ukraine lets oil from Russia’s Lukoil company flow through a tunnel in Hungary. Hungary and Slovakia stopped getting oil from Lukoil through the Druzhba pipeline at the start of this month. This is because Ukraine stopped the flow of resources from Lukoil last month.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin is the secretary of state for the Vatican. He met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, in Kyiv. He praised the work that the Holy See does to bring about peace.

During his call with Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin made it clear that the United States will always support Kyiv.

This was the first call between the defense heads since US President Joe Biden ended his bid for re-election and backed Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for November.

A list of United Kingdom nationals barred from entering the country was also expanded after Moscow alleged that they had made anti-Russian public statements about Ukraine or were training or arming the Ukrainian military.

PM Kristen Michal vowed continuity on the issue with the previous government, saying Estonia would support Ukraine until it “wins” its war with Russia.

Almost a third of Ukrainians would accept some territorial concessions to Russia for a quick end to the war, according to a poll by Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.

Russian journalist Mikhail Zygar has been found guilty in absentia of spreading false information about the Russian army and sentenced to eight and a half years in prison in Moscow. According to Zygar, Russian forces committed war crimes against the Ukrainian town of Bucha in April 2022, which led to the charges against him.

“We are gradually approaching the possibility of using our own missiles, not only relying on missiles supplied by our partners,” Zelenskyy said in his evening video address.

To aid Ukrainian economy, the US Treasury Department has ordered the country’s banks to disclose their holdings of Russian assets.
