The British Medical Journal wrote in Roy’s death notice that he was the “first medical consultant in the subcontinent of India, who towered over his contemporaries in several fields.”
Roy was born in Patna on July 1, 1882. He first studied math at Patna College and then became a doctor. He went to the Calcutta Medical College after getting his bachelor’s degree from Patna.
Bidhan Chandra Roy Early Life, Childhood and Education
His family was a Bengali Hindu Kayastha-Brahmo, and he was born in Patna in 1882. There was a lot of money in his family, so his father, Prakash Chandra Roy, was a tax inspector. His mother, Aghorkamini Devi, worked in religion and social work.
Bidhan was the fifth child and youngest of five children. His parents were Brahmo Samajists. Prakash Chandra was related to Maharaja Pradapaditya, the rebel Hindu king of Jessore, but his family did not leave him much money.
As a child, Bidhan and his brothers were taught to “give and take,” which meant they should share what they valued.
He left Patna in 1901 to go to Kolkata to study at the Medical College and Hospital. While he was there, he read something that moved him.
In 1909, he took ₹1200 and went to Britain to become a doctor at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. Bidhan’s application was turned down at first by the hospital’s head, but after 30 requests, he was finally let in.

Bidhan Chandra Roy Career
Roy, who is committed and works hard, joined the Provincial Health Service when he got back to India.
He was the first head of the Cardiological Society of India and taught at a number of medical schools. Unless people were healthy and strong in mind and body, Roy thought that swaraj (the call to action for India’s freedom) would stay a dream.
He built hospitals like the Jadavpur T.B. Hospital, the Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, the Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, the Victoria Institution, and the Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, which are all important to medical education. Roy was the doctor and friend of Mahatma Gandhi.
Roy ran for the Bengal Legislative Council as an independent in 1925 and beat Surendranath Banerjee.
He voted for the Swaraj Party and suggested ways to clean up Hoogly’s air and water. Roy was chosen for the All India Congress Committee in 1928 and was Mayor of the Corporation from 1930 to 1931.
He added more services to the Corporation, such as free medical care, schooling, roads, lighting, and water. Roy was also the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. He helped out when the Japanese bombed Rangoon in 1942.
Roy was made Premier of West Bengal by the Congress Party. He had to deal with problems like fighting between different groups, lack of food, unemployment, and refugees.
He stressed that everyone in the party should work together and follow the rules. He also said that problems could be solved with faith and drive. It was Roy who became the first Chief Minister in 1950. He also won elections for the West Bengal legislative assembly in 1952 and 1957.
During partition, he built up towns like Bidhannagar, Kalyani, and Durgapur, which helped West Bengal’s economy.
Bidhan Chandra Roy Death
Roy passed away on July 1, 1962. By chance, it was also the day he was born. His home was turned into a care home after he died and was named after his mother, Aghorkamini Devi.
He also set up a trust in Patna to use his property for social good. The famous nationalist Ganga Sharan Singh (Sinha) was the first director of the trust.
