Amazon Introduces ‘Dash Carts’ to Replace Cashierless ‘Just Walk Out’ System in Fresh Stores

Amazon Introduces ‘Dash Carts’ to Replace Cashierless ‘Just Walk Out’ System: US Fresh stores will replace Just Walk Out technology with Dash Cart smart shopping carts over the next 18 months. Just Walk Out will be phased out in larger stores, but will remain in smaller outlets. Dash Carts will be implemented in new stores over the next 18 months.

Instead of using its “Just Walk Out” technology in its Fresh grocery stores in the US, Amazon will introduce its “Dash Cart” smart shopping cart instead.

According to The Information, Amazon will gradually phase out the Just Walk Out system from all larger Fresh stores currently using it.

It plans to open new Fresh locations equipped with Dash Carts over the next 18 months and phase out Just Walk Out in existing stores.

Just Walk Out technology was introduced in 2016. It allows customers to scan a QR code as they enter the store, select their items, and simply walk out.

To identify and complete transactions, the system uses cameras, sensors, and remote employees.

Just Walk Out, as reported, has high costs due to the necessary equipment and delays in processing transactions, with some customers waiting for hours before receiving a receipt.

By 2022, Amazon wants 700 out of 1,000 reviews on Just Walk Out sales, way over its internal goal of 50 reviews per 1,000. The Dash Cart system lets customers check out while shopping at Fresh stores, which have a scanner and screen.

There will also be self-checkout counters for non-Amazon members. While Amazon is phasing out Just Walk Out technology in the US, it will continue to be used in some Fresh stores in the United Kingdom and Amazon Go convenience stores.
